Tanya Canty is the Senior Director at Mission United of United Way of South Hampton Roads. Unite Us launched the Mission United of South Hampton Roads network 1 year ago, in Hampton Roads, VA and to date the network has made tremendous impact in the local community in serving local Veterans and partnering with key Veteran organizations while also making significant progress in building and growing the size of the network and thus the reach of impact.

Tanya has played a key role in the success of the network and the team at Unite Us has enjoyed being welcomed to play such an integral role in bringing these providers together. Our interview with Tanya, showcases her leadership and drive to ensuring that Mission United of South Hampton Roads fulfills the community's obligation to ensure that every Veteran is taken care of.

Q. What are the reasons that you got into the work you're doing now?

A.  I believe it is the obligation of every community to provide for those who served our great nation.  As a veteran, I understand transitioning from the military.  It doesn't matter if you're separating after a few years, retiring after 20, being medically discharged or being forced out due to high year tenure, reintegrating back into the "civilian world" is stressful.  There are many changes:  the move, the job search, finding affordable, quality housing, the financial change, the cultural shift, transferring military skills into civilian speak, etc.  It can be completely overwhelming for those suffering from the aftermath of combat.  We want to ease that burden.  We have the latest technology in place (also founded by Veterans) that enable us to provide our military connected families with the resources and services they need to create better opportunities for themselves and their families.

Q. Why do you love it?

A. Because this is Collective Impact.  Rather than duplicating services, we partner to unify them.  As a result, veterans have one entry point to access all the services they need to achieve successful reintegration into economically independent civilian life.  This is my community working together to make a difference.

Q. What has been the impact of what you are doing?

A. The United Way of South Hampton Roads brings people and organizations together to solve problems too big for any of us to solve alone.  To date, Mission United is comprised of 46 Network Partners and over 110 Network Service Providers.  Since our launch of Mission United on Veterans Day of 2016, we've successfully made a difference in the lives of over 1500 military connected families!

Q. What is a success story of helping another Veteran or Service Member?

A.Too many to mention just one.  My most favorite - helping over 20 homeless veterans transition into affordable housing!
